Store food and supplies in the museum’s catering kitchen, which you’ll also find stocked with hot drink making facilities and light snacks to enjoy during your stay. Otherwise, why not relax with a laughter-filled board or card game in the crew’s mess? You could also head back to the museum to watch a World War Two movie, view the exhibits during opening hours, or use the private bathroom facilities (although there are bathrooms on board the submarine, they are over 75 years old and not functional!) Keep reading You’ll be accompanied by a dedicated member of staff, who will be your point of contact throughout your stay, and who will also be sleeping aboard the submarine (though not directly with you, of course!) They will be on hand to take you on a personalised, story-filled tour, if you feel like getting to know your mesmerising surroundings a little better. Once aboard, you’ll get to take charge of your very own adventure… with access to the entire submarine, and with 65 sleeping spaces to choose from, in sailors’ bunks dotted throughout, your stay will be utterly unique! You’ll embark USS Cobia directly via the museum, by stairs, and through seven bulkhead doors that will make you feel like a wartime sailor preparing for battle. The museum itself is an immersive time-capsule, with fascinating exhibits on submarines, car ferries, shipwrecks, and model boats. Now floating in the vast Manitowoc River, just behind the famous Wisconsin Maritime Museum, you’ll have a unique opportunity to rest your heads onboard, take a personalised tour, and imagine just what knife-edge military life must have been like all those years ago. These days, the iconic submarine is the best-preserved in the country, meticulously restored, and boasting added comforts including soft bedding, toiletries, heating and aircon. Pilger worked in the shipyard building subs before joining the Navy and serving on USS Jallao, which was built in Manitowoc.Launched in 1943, USS Cobia was vital to the American effort during World War Two, sinking thirteen Japanese vessels. Along the Riverwalk is also the Gerald R. There are also plaques along the city’s Riverwalk between the museum and Cobia that highlight each of the Manitowoc Submarines and their commissioning crews. In addition to featuring Wisconsin's maritime heritage, the museum has an exhibit on the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company and Burger Boat. Cobia itself is a National Historic Landmark and International Submariners Memorial, and there is a state historical marker next to the museum describing the Manitowoc submarines. Two years later in 1970, USS Cobia (SS 245) arrived in Manitowoc to serve as a memorial to the Manitowoc subs. WWII submarine veterans founded the Wisconsin Maritime Museum to honor "the fine work done by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, and it's employees" during WWII, and created the Manitowoc Submariners Memorial Association. Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company received the coveted Minuteman "Bullseye" banner for having 100% of workers participate. The one-night show in Manitowoc obtained over one million dollars in war bond sales, second only to Milwaukee. For example, in February 1944 a touring stage show called "It's the McCoy'' played at the Capitol Theatre in Manitowoc. Manitowoc raised a substantial amount of money for the war effort through war bonds through rallies, shows and events held in the city. The first Manitowoc built submarine, USS Peto, was launched on April 30, 1942. The company produced a total of twenty-eight Gato and Balao Class submarines between 1941-1945. The Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, headed by Charles West, petitioned the Navy to build destroyers but were asked instead to build submarines, the most sophisticated technological platforms of the time, due to the availability of skilled craftsmen in the area. Most notably, the city produced twenty-eight submarines, which were ordered by the United States Navy for use in the Second World War. Located in northeastern Wisconsin, along the shores of Lake Michigan, Manitowoc, Wisconsin served a vital role in World War II due to its production of hundreds of items used in the war effort. There is not even a note app included, which has to be downloaded from the sparsely stocked Amazon App Store. Aside from the 3-month trial version of Office 365, there are no preinstalled apps that can serve as work tools. In matters of productivity, Amazon gets in the way of itself a little with the software features of Fire OS 8.3. The touchpad is quite small at around 8.5 x 4.2 centimeters, but serves its purpose. The keys are sufficiently large at 1.5 x 1.5 centimeters, but do not provide a particularly pleasant typing feel due to the low key travel. The protective cover has an integrated stand that can be opened steplessly up to around 120 degrees. The keyboard magnetically docks onto the five pins on the tablet's underside and is powered via them. The two-part keyboard case consists of a QWERTY keyboard unit and a protective cover for the back. However, installing Google will void the 1-year manufacturer's warranty for the tablet because, according to Amazon, this constitutes improper use. How this can be done is shown in this review (only in German). But Google services and the Google App Store can be easily installed. The Fire Max 11 is not intended to reach beyond the Amazon universe because Google Play is not officially supported on the tablet. A kids mode is also integrated, which parents can use to provide their children with age-appropriate videos, games, books and learning apps. Other preinstalled apps include Audible, Amazon Photos and Music as well as the Alexa assistant, which allows you to conveniently control the tablet by voice in hands-free mode. Alexa-enabled devices can be controlled directly from the tablet. Thanks to DRM Widevine L1 support, the tablet can also play video content from streaming services such as the company's Prime Video in HD quality. There are also apps such as Amazon itself and the Amazon App Store, which replaces Google Play. The browser is not Chrome, but the Silk Browser. The apps displayed on the homepage are all tailored to the Amazon universe. The tabs are opened by tapping on them or swiping to the next one. In addition to Amazon products, the contents of the media library are also displayed there. The tablet distributes content across the three Fire OS tabs For You, Home and Library. A positive aspect is that the tablet will be provided with Android security updates until at least 2027, according to the manufacturer. The Android 11-based user interface is geared entirely towards Amazon content and can therefore only be used meaningfully with an Amazon account. The Fire OS 8.3 of the Amazon Fire Max 11 has little in common with standard Android. The 3.5 mm jack connection of the predecessor has been omitted from the Fire Max 11. However, the exFAT file system is not supported. The internal memory can be expanded using a microSD card, which can be up to 1 TB in size. Our 64 GB test device offers around 54GB of free space upon booting up for the first time. The basic storage configuration (64 GB, without lockscreen ads) of the Fire Max 11 with pen and keyboard case starts at $329.97. 128 GB, without lockscreen ads: $239.99Īmazon also offers the tablet in a bundle with a stylus and/or a keyboard case.128 GB, with lockscreen ads: ( currently unavailable). The four variants (excluding accessories) are: If you opt for the slightly cheaper variant with lockscreen ads, sponsored screensavers are displayed on the lock screen and in idle mode. If you don't put the tablet in the optional keyboard case, it wobbles back and forth on flat surfaces.Īmazon offers the Fire Max 11 with 64 and 128 GB of eMMC storage and gives buyers the choice between a configuration with or without lockscreen ads. Unlike the Fire HD 10 Plus (2021), the rear camera, which now has a resolution of 8 MP instead of 5 MP, protrudes a few millimeters from the case. However, there is still no IP certification.Ī pogo pin strip is located on the bottom of the tablet for connecting the magnetic docking keyboard. While the Fire HD 10 Plus (2021) weighs 465 grams, the Fire Max 11 remains almost as light at 490 grams, which also makes it quite handy in everyday use. Like its predecessor, the front of the Fire Max 11 is made of aluminum silicate glass.ĭespite the display having grown from 10.1 to 11 inches, the weight has hardly changed. The display edges have become significantly narrower, meaning that the display-to-surface ratio has increased from 72 to a solid 81 percent. As the first Amazon tablet with a metal back, it feels significantly more sturdy and higher quality than the Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus (2021), which has a plastic chassis. The 7.5 millimeter thin Amazon Fire Max 11 does away with the old-fashioned design of its predecessor in two areas. Want to initiate conversation and do not know how to? For example, Jonathan Graziano, who went viral on TikTok with his pug Noodle. And those people would go on to find their own success. To make these viral moments, Grissom looked for people with not just content talent, but comedic talent as well. So when our latest guest shared the lesson, “use artificial intelligence and your marketing budget to make your customers’ lives more fun and interesting” I was all ears to learn a new perspective on using AI…and really, a unique perspective on how to approach marketing in general. But I’ve mostly been thinking of artificial intelligence in a very practical sense. We’ve been exploring AI in the MECLABS SuperFunnel Research Cohort LiveClasses. This article was published in the MarketingSherpa email newsletter. Many schools aren’t required to offer chronically absent students make-up work, and allow individual teachers the discretion of when and how to enforce this measure, which can hurt students’ grade average. Under the law, fines or jail time could be imposed, though the codes encourage schools and courts to take less punitive approaches. In Georgia, after five unexcused absences-in which a parent or a medical doctor has not provided an approved excuse-parents are sent a letter informing them of misdemeanor educational-neglect charges that could be filed against them. Some school attendance policies punish both the kids and their parents when students miss too many days. (The organization has recommended suspending the use of these guidelines during the pandemic.) That advice is similar to my daughter’s school’s policy. One of the largest attendance advocacy organizations, Attendance Works, affirms this behavior with their “ How Sick Is Too Sick?” downloadable handout, which says as long as a child hasn’t had a fever or taken any fever-reducing medication for 24 hours, and hasn’t had diarrhea or vomited in 24 hours, he or she should not stay home. And many schools’ policies are fairly lax about students coming to school with seemingly mild symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat, or cough. To motivate students, many schools award prizes for perfect attendance. Read: School wasn’t so great before COVID, either (The findings also showed that students who are Black, Hispanic, Native American, or from low-income households were more likely to be chronically absent.) Less is known about the effects of frequent absences on elementary students, but a 2015 report out of the University of Wisconsin at Madison evaluated the impacts of first-grade absences on third-grade standardized-test scores: Chronically absent students scored lower on the tests, particularly in math. Studies have shown that chronic absenteeism in middle school and high school hinders academic achievement and outcomes later in life, such as graduation rates and job opportunities. Schools place a premium on attendance because it is associated with academic performance. So I started keeping her home, which meant playing catch-up with her assignments later. I didn’t want to sacrifice my child’s well-being to meet attendance expectations. Even if her asthma wasn’t flaring up during an infection, I had to monitor her closely for signs of an impending attack and administer several medications at precise times throughout the day. But she has asthma, and it got progressively worse each grade, landing her in the hospital nearly every time she came down with “just a cold,” causing her to miss up to five days of school at a time, four times a year. She was permitted to attend school as long as she was fever-free without the use of any medicine for 24 hours. No sleepless nights.ĭuring my oldest daughter’s kindergarten and first-grade years, I sent her to school several times with a runny nose or a slight cough, just like the parents of many of her classmates did. We’re extremely fortunate that none of us have caught the coronavirus, but on top of that, our days and weeks hadn’t been upended by multiple colds or the flu over the past year. My husband and I noticed this with a sense of relief after months of virtual schooling. Staying home to avoid catching and spreading the coronavirus during the pandemic, for all the fear and anxiety it has caused, has come with one unexpected benefit for my family: My kids haven’t been sick once, not even with the common cold. Vyskocil's ruling last week, dismissing a slander lawsuit filed against Carlson, was a win for Fox, First Amendment principles and the media more generally, as Fox News itself maintains. Carlson's statements as 'exaggeration,' 'non-literal commentary,' or simply bloviating for his audience, the conclusion remains the same - the statements are not actionable." Vyskocil, an appointee of President Trump's, added, "Whether the Court frames Mr. Carlson's reputation, any reasonable viewer 'arrive with an appropriate amount of skepticism' about the statement he makes." She wrote: "Fox persuasively argues, that given Mr. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil's opinion, leaning heavily on the arguments of Fox's lawyers: The "'general tenor' of the show should then inform a viewer that is not 'stating actual facts' about the topics he discusses and is instead engaging in 'exaggeration' and 'non-literal commentary.' " It's being made by a federal judge in the Southern District of New York and by Fox News's own lawyers in defending Carlson against accusations of slander. And that assertion is not coming from Carlson's critics. Now comes the claim that you can't expect to literally believe the words that come out of Carlson's mouth. That anchor, Shepard Smith, quit mid-contract shortly after Carlson went after him. Yet Carlson endures in his prime-time slot.Ĭarlson even attacked his own network's chief news anchor on the air, with no real consequences. Fox News' top-rated host has been repeatedly accused of anti-immigrant and racist comments, which have cost his political opinion show many of its major advertisers. Tucker Carlson appears to be made of Teflon. UPDATE: Michigan State officiall announced Barnett as the interim head coach with Dantonio joining the staff as an associate head coach.Fox News host Tucker Carlson "is not 'stating actual facts' about the topics he discusses and is instead engaging in 'exaggeration' and 'non-literal commentary,' " U.S. He served as the defensive coordinator at Florida State in 20 before returning to East Lansing as the secondary coach in 2020. After his NFL career, he got into coaching and landed back with the Spartans in 2007 as DBs coach under Dantonio. Why didn't Michigan State suspend him sooner? According to Dan Murphy of ESPN, university leadership was aware there was a complaint made against Tucker but "they did not know any details until night." Michigan State interim head coach: Who will coach the Spartans with Mel Tucker fired?Īccording to McMurphy, secondary coach Harlon Barnett will take over as interim head coach with ex-Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio "expected to assist in an undefined role."īarnett is a Michigan State alumnus. He coached games against Central Michigan and Richmond to begin the 2023 season. Tucker was allowed to recruit for and coach the Spartans throughout the year despite the open investigation. A hearing to determine whether Tucker violated school rules was scheduled for October. She delivered a report to the school in July. The school hired a Title IX attorney Rebecca Leitman to conduct an investigation. Tracy, who had a professional relationship with Michigan State as a paid speaker, filed a complaint with the school in December 2022. Tucker claims it was consensual "phone sex." Tracy alleges it was inappropriate and not consensual. The incident at the heart of the complaint revolves around an April 2022 phone call in which both parties agree Tucker masturbated on the line. However, to sum it up, Tucker is accused of inappropriate behavior towards Brenda Tracy, a rape survivor and advocate who worked with the head coach as part of her work to educate athletes about preventing sexual assault and violence. USA Today outlined the sexual harassment investigation into Tucker's behavior in an extensive article that is worth reading in full. Mel Tucker sexual harrasment: What was the Michigan State head coach accused of doing? UPDATE: Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller officially announced that Mel Tucker has been suspended without pay. Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press reported Tucker is "suspended without pay pending the outcome of the Title IX investigation." However, McMurphy noted that the school will "wait until Title IX investigation is completed to make Tucker's move official." Dismissing him with cause would allow them to get out of his greater than $70 million buyout. On Sunday, Brett McMurphy of Stadium reported that the Spartans will fire the head coach after a damning report from Kenny Jacoby of USA Today exposed allegations of sexual misconduct against him. Mel Tucker is out at Michigan State and it's not because of his poor performance on the football field.
